Local News in Brief : Physician Honored by ACLU Chapter

The former chairman of the Los Angeles City/County AIDS Task Force and past president of the American Assn. of Physicians for Human Rights is this year’s recipient of the Human Rights Award from the Lesbian and Gay Rights Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Dr. Neil Schram received the honor at an awards dinner at the Biltmore in downtown Los Angeles Friday night.

Schram, an internist with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Harbor City, chairs the committee that helps establish ACLU policy on AIDS-related issues.

Other honors included the Community Activist Award given to Diane Himes and the Rev. Carl Bean. Himes once co-chaired the Lobby for Individual Freedom and Equality, a Sacramento-based lobbying group for gay and lesbian organizations. Bean is the founder and director of the Minority Aids Project.

The ceremony also honored attorney Jon Davidson for his legal efforts to keep the workplace and schools open to AIDS victims.
