Hurricane Helene, still far from land, weakened as it headed north across the Atlantic Ocean, and forecasters said the threat to the Caribbean region had passed. The National Hurricane Center in Miami put the storm’s center at about 830 miles east-northeast of the island of Barbados and said it is moving north-northwest at about 10 m.p.h. Helene’s maximum sustained winds dropped from 140 m.p.h. to 115 m.p.h., and forecasters said further weakening is possible as the storm continues toward the northern Atlantic. Forecasters also said that the hurricane is not expected to interfere with the planned launch of the space shuttle Discovery from Florida, now set for Thursday.
