Tens of thousands of singing and chanting demonstrators, calling for peace in Chile 10 days ahead of a presidential referendum, linked hands to form a human chain around the streets of Santiago. “For peace, for peace, Chile wants to live in peace!” chanted demonstrators, who transformed the Chilean capital into a colorful carnival as they gathered on city streets. The demonstration was called by the Civic Crusade, which has been promoting a campaign of civic education in working-class areas before the Oct. 5 vote. President Augusto Pinochet is seeking a further eight-year term in Chile’s first direct vote on his rule since the bloody coup that brought him to power 15 years ago.
