The Most Rev. Edward C. O’Leary, bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland, announced his retirement Tuesday, citing reasons of poor health. O’Leary, 68, for 14 years spiritual leader of Maine’s 278,000 Catholics, will head the statewide diocese until Pope John Paul II names a successor.

Meeting with reporters at the Catholic Chancery, O’Leary did not elaborate on his illness but acknowledged having high blood pressure. He said he has been on a low-salt, low-cholesterol diet for some time.
