Beijing, Moscow Set 1st High-Level Visit Since Ideological Rift
Chinese Foreign Minister Qian Qichen will travel to the Soviet Union later this year in the first such visit since the ideological split of the two Communist giants two decades ago, a Soviet spokesman said today.
Soviet spokesman Gennady Gerasimov told reporters that Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard A. Shevardnadze met with Qian at the United Nations today to discuss the planned visit to Moscow for talks on improving diplomatic relations between the two countries.
“They discussed the visit,” Gerasimov said. “Relations must be normalized completely. We are on our way.”
Gerasimov, the chief spokesman for the Soviet Foreign Ministry, said Shevardnadze will pay a return visit to Beijing next year.
