Share

A U.S. immigration judge has signed a deportation notice requiring that a retired factory worker living in La Puente be deported for having served as an armed guard at a Nazi death camp where as many as 4 million people were murdered during World War II.

Josef Eckert, 74, admitted his membership in an SS guard unit assigned to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland and having fraudulently concealed his service at the camp to obtain a visa to enter the United States in April, 1956, according to federal authorities.

Eckert, who was born in what is now Yugoslavia, has asked that he be deported to Austria.

The U.S. Justice Department announced plans in December, 1987, to deport Eckert.
