The World : Britain, Iran to Discuss Ties
British and Iranian officials will meet at the United Nations on Friday to discuss improving diplomatic relations, British Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe said. Howe, who will confer with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, was asked at the United Nations to comment on reports that the two countries will announce a full restoration of ties, and he responded with a smile, “Watch this space.” London and Tehran downgraded their diplomatic representation to just one diplomat on each side in June, 1987, after the arrest of an Iranian diplomat in Britain on shoplifting charges and the manhandling of a British diplomat in Tehran.
