Emperor Hirohito received blood transfusions for the 12th consecutive day to counteract internal bleeding that has plagued him for more than two weeks. The 87-year-old emperor has received a total of about 11 pints of blood. Palace officials continued to describe his condition as stable. Thousands of Japanese each day go to the palace gates to pray for him, but the Japan-China Friendship Assn. protested what it called an attempt to impose a mood of grief on the nation for the man “most responsible” for Japan’s part in World War II.
