About 5,000 Yugoslav workers tried to force their way into Parliament in Belgrade to press demands, including the resignation of the government. Protesters chanted “We are going in!” but hundreds of police stationed in front of the building stopped them from entering. The protesters had marched from an industrial suburb to the legislature to protest low wages and falling living standards with soaring inflation. The demonstrators also demanded “an urgent session of the Parliament, which should unseat the government of Premier Branko Mikulic.” Deputy Premier Milo Milosavljevic told the demonstrators the government would be willing to resign if Parliament made that decision.
