Algerian youths protesting rising inflation rampaged through the central district of Algiers, setting cars ablaze and breaking shop windows. Police looked on at first, then used tear gas in some areas, diplomats reported. Algeria has had several strikes recently, and new ones were reported at the main office of Air Algerie, the post office and various industries. Bread is subsidized, but beef costs nearly $12 a pound. Strikers and protesters also complain of shortages.
