Robbery Suspect Seized on Beach

A San Diego man was arrested on the beach Friday on suspicion of robbing a nearby Pacific Beach branch of Great American First Savings Bank, police said.

Roy Hendrix Long, 43, was being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown.

At about 10:30 a.m., a man entered the bank in the 5100 block of Mission Boulevard and gave a teller a note demanding all the teller’s cash, police spokesman Bill Robinson said. He stuffed $980 in a Padres duffel bag and escaped on foot, Robinson said.

Shortly afterward, a van believed to have been used by the robber was recovered at Tourmaline Surf Park, near the crime scene, Robinson said. Police found what appeared to be the robber’s clothing in a search of the park’s restrooms, Robinson said.

Police found Long on the beach, with part of the loot, looking at the ocean, said Robinson.
