China Reports Spread of Endemic Diseases

BEIJING — More than 60 million Chinese, or about 5% of the population, are affected by endemic diseases such as leprosy and the plague, the official China Daily reported Wednesday.
The newspaper reported that Vice Minister of Public Health He Jiesheng told a recent conference that both the plague and schistosomiasis--a chronic disease in which parasites invade the blood stream--are on the rise.
