U.S., Soviets Pool Health Effort

The United States and the Soviet Union today signed a five-year agreement providing for joint research programs to combat AIDS, drug abuse, alcoholism and polio.

Signing for the Soviet side, Valentin Pokrovsky, president of the Soviet Academy of Medical Sciences, expressed hope that the ceremony will mark the “beginning of a wonderful long road which we will travel together.” Samuel O. Thier, president of the National Institute of Medicine, signed for the United States.
