A federal judge today threw out a lawsuit against Continental Airlines by flight attendants challenging a drug-testing policy, saying sober, reliable flight crews are critical to public safety.

U.S. District Judge Dickran Tevrizian dismissed the lawsuit by the Union of Flight Attendants Local 1 on technical legal grounds and did not rule on the merits of the drug-testing program itself. But he told the lawyers that he believes a drug-testing policy is appropriate for flight crews.
