Queen Elizabeth II, on the first state visit to Spain by a reigning British monarch, today praised Spain’s “exemplary” return to democracy in the past decade.

Her remarks before a joint session of the Spanish Cortes (Parliament) drew a 90-second standing ovation from congressmen and senators.

In a tour of the Parliament building later, Speaker Felix Pons pointed out the bullet holes in the ceiling fired by a civil guard in a coup attempt in 1981.

“And you were all sitting there!” the queen said in surprise.
