Subsidiaries of Hughes Aircraft and North American Philips agreed to test a high-definition television system next year. The deal, valued at $2.5 million, involves Hughes Communications Inc. of Los Angeles, a leading satellite operator, and Philips Laboratories, whose scientists in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., developed the high-definition system. If tests go as planned, satellite delivery of high-definition TV to the United States could be implemented in the early 1990s, the companies said in a joint statement.
