American Express Co.’s third-quarter profit fell 12.9% from a year ago to $282.1 million, largely because of weakness at its Shearson Lehman Hutton Inc. and American Express Bank units. The New York diversified financial services company said its travel-related services and IDS Financial Services reported strong results in the quarter.
