President Reagan ordered 100% tariffs on some $39 million worth of selective imports from Brazil in retaliation for unfair trade practices in the latest escalation of a nagging trade dispute. The action, announced by U.S. Trade Representative Clayton K. Yeutter, will effectively double the price of paper products, consumer electronics and selected pharmaceuticals from Brazil and will take effect in 10 days. The move fulfills a threat made in late July to punish Brazil for a refusal to provide patent protection to U.S. pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
