Still burning from its first regular-season loss in more than 3 years, Miami took out its frustration Saturday on undermanned Cincinnati at the Orange Bowl.

The result was a 57-3 whipping that gave 4th-ranked Miami a 5-1 record and an improved mental outlook.

Steve Walsh tied a school record by throwing 5 touchdown passes, and Miami had 6 sacks.

After falling to Notre Dame, 31-30, last weekend in South Bend, Ind., to lose their No. 1 ranking, the Hurricanes promised to take out their frustrations on the Bearcats (2-5). And they made good on that vow, jumping to a 24-0 lead after a quarter and a 34-3 halftime lead.

Miami outgained Cincinnati 481 yards to 104, including a 159-4 advantage on the ground.

The victory was the 22nd in a row at home for Miami, which also got a record-tying 7 extra points from Carlos Huerta.

The Hurricanes, who had their 36-game regular-season winning streak snapped last weekend at Notre Dame, had a school-record 6 touchdown passes.

“We got out of it what we had hoped for,” Miami Coach Jimmy Johnson said. “I thought we were sharp and we played hard. We got some breaks in the 1st quarter and that kind of set the stage for the rest of the game.”

The 5 touchdown passes by Walsh tied Bernie Kosar’s record, set against Cincinnati in 1984. Walsh completed 19 of 23 passes for 286 yards and was not intercepted. He has thrown 13 touchdown passes in the last 3 games.

Florida State 66, Louisiana Tech 3--Defensive backs Deion Sanders and Dedrick Dodge scored on interception returns, and Terry Anthony and Bruce LaSane each caught 2 touchdown passes as the 7th-ranked Seminoles routed the Division I-AA Bulldogs at Tallahassee, Fla.

However, the game may have been costly for the Seminoles.

Senior quarterback Chip Ferguson, ranked 6th nationally in passing, left the game in the 2nd quarter with a mild separation of his left shoulder. Florida State is 7-1.
