Up to 4.2 million Americans, about four times as many as previously estimated, may be addicted to gambling, a federal study showed.
Rachel Volberg, who directed the research, said an inaccurate portrait had been drawn of the typical gambler as white, middle-aged, middle-class and male. Results now indicate that 36% of problem gamblers are women, 43% are non-white and 38% are under 30. Sixty percent have annual incomes of less than $25,000.
