U.N. in Need of Major Changes, U.S. Panel Says
The leading U.S. citizens group concerned with the United Nations said Thursday that the world body is in need of major changes and that the next Administration in Washington should make U.N. reform a top priority.
The report released by the United Nations Assn. of the United States and its chairman, Elliot L. Richardson, a former U.S. attorney general, lamented that U.S.-U.N. ties are in disarray and urged the next Administration to pay U.S. arrears of more than $400 million.
The United Nations Assn. of the United States is a nonpartisan, nationwide organization with more than 20,000 members. Its recommendations are based on public meetings in about 100 communities.
Its report made about 85 specific recommendations, including changing the General Assembly voting system and enlarging Security Council membership.
