Israeli soldiers Wednesday killed a Palestinian man who confronted the troops when they pursued masked, stone-throwing youths into his home in Qalqiliya in the occupied West Bank, the army said.

Arab witnesses and hospital officials said that the youth’s mother suffered a gunshot wound in the clash, as did an 18-year-old Palestinian. The army confirmed the second youth’s wounding, saying it came during a scuffle with soldiers. The town, 30 miles northwest of Jerusalem, later was placed under curfew.

At the same time, Arabs throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip staged a general strike marking the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, which was signed in 1917 and signaled Britain’s recognition of the Zionist movement’s goal of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine.

The strike was the second in as many days. On Tuesday, Palestinians shuttered their stores and stopped most buses and taxis in a strike coinciding with Israel’s national elections.
