THE COLLEGES : Roundup : Coate of UC Irvine Sets Swimming Mark

UC Irvine freshman Devon Coate set a school record in the 1,000-meter freestyle as the Anteaters defeated the University of San Diego, 159-74, in a nonconference women’s swimming meet Friday at UC Irvine.

Coate, a graduate of Tustin High School, won the race with a time of 10 minutes 35.52 seconds to break Karen Whitenack’s record of 10:42.0 set in 1981. Coate also was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.72).

The Anteaters’ Danielle Pajer finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.76) and second in the 100 freestyle (57.17). Diver Trishna Coleman won the 1-meter (224.63) and 3-meter (229.05) events.

In Big West men’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 2, UC Irvine 0--Jeff Willard scored twice in the second half for visiting Fullerton (7-10 overall, 4-4-1 in conference). UC Irvine is 7-11, 3-6.
