Profiled in the November issue of American Film, British director Julien Temple (“Absolute Beginners”) was asked if he’d use an actor like Bill Murray in one of his films. Responded Temple: “Not Bill Murray. I wouldn’t have dinner with Bill Murray, let alone cast him in a (bleep) movie.”

Sizzling quote, right? Except . . . wrong actor. Temple insists he told American Film he’d never have dinner with Bill Hurt.

“I like Bill Murray,” Temple told Outtakes. “We’ve even talked about doing a film together.”

OK, but what’s so awful about William Hurt? “I have nothing against him,” Temple said. “Except for spending an awful dinner with him in London. . . .

“He was so rude that by the end of the night we’d all moved to the far end of the table and left him speaking French on his own. He was so out of it he must’ve thought he was in Paris.”

Margy Rochlin, who wrote the American Film piece, said the magazine will run a correction in the December issue: “It was my mistake. I just didn’t hear the tape right. There was nothing malicious about it.

“The point I was trying to make was that when Temple dislikes one of his Hollywood colleagues, he’s straight forward about it.”
