DAY-CARE HERO

Regarding “The Hero of Day Care,” by David DeVoss (Sept. 11): Bill Ewing’s ordinary citizen’s face surrounded by the sweet faces of innocent children reminds us of what many politicians have conveniently forgotten: The child-care issue is not just a political harp string that can be plucked now and then to vibrate loose a few hundred thousand votes. It is a flesh and blood, feelings and survival issue for practically every man, woman, boy and girl living in this country. When there is inadequate child care available, pre-teens and teen-age children must stay home from school to care for young children; parents endanger or even lose their jobs because of frequent absences; young children are abused or neglected by untrained, uncaring baby-sitters or by desperate, distraught parents. There are many heroes/heroines who work within the system to elevate the lives of children and their parents. I applaud your article, as it may stoke the tenacity of other humane and visionary bureaucrats.
