Return the Cart

The letter from a reader, “Paris Update” (Oct. 2), stated that luggage carts cost 10 francs to rent at train stations. However, the 10 francs are returned when the cart is returned to a designated return spot. For example, at Gare de Lyon in Paris, there is a cart return directly to the left of the taxi area. There is another return approximately 30 meters to the right of the taxi area.

When you return your cart, you snap it into the back of another cart, which releases a mechanism. You put the key that is on the chain back into its slot, and the rack slot where you put your 10 francs opens for you to take back the 10 francs. You are not renting the cart, you are paying a 10 franc deposit, which is returned if you return the cart.
