Britain’s broadcast journalism union decided Sunday it would not advocate a one-day broadcasting strike, an action designed to protest the Thatcher government’s ban on interviews with Irish Republican Army operatives. The National Union of Journalists’ general secretary, Harry Conroy, said union management felt the mini-strike--scheduled for Nov. 10--would hurt the British Broadcasting Corp. and other TV news outfits more than it would affect government policy. However, Conroy added, the union was not in a position to stop individual branches from going ahead with the strike if they wished.
