The World : Hirohito Survives Crisis
Japan’s Emperor Hirohito rebounded from the worst crisis so far in his eight-week fight for life, and doctors reported big improvement in his condition. “The emperor’s condition is stable,” said Akira Takagi, Hirohito’s chief doctor. Palace spokesman Kenji Maeda told reporters that Hirohito’s heart and kidneys had apparently suffered no bad effects in the crisis period. The 87-year-old emperor’s blood pressure fell to as low as 68/30 but recovered to 118/58 by early today. Hirohito’s pulse rate had also slowed considerably. His temperature returned to normal after a high fever occurred during the crisis.
