More than 300 Northern Ireland policewomen won Britain’s biggest sex discrimination award today--almost $1.7 million.

Northern Ireland Police Chief Sir John Hermon had refused to renew the contracts of 310 officers, arguing that they could not carry out full duties because he would not allow them to carry firearms or be trained in their use. The officers took their case to a Belfast industrial tribunal. The police authority decided to settle out of court.
