Sailors on the battleship New Jersey were in for a special family reunion when they returned to Long Beach on Wednesday from a four-month Pacific cruise: 38 babies were born during their absence.

The jubilant 1,500-man crew was greeted by friends and relatives as the 887-foot ship docked at Pier 6 at Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

Since July 7, the 58,000-ton vessel has been on tour with the U.S. 7th Fleet, traveling more than 23,000 miles and visiting two ports in Korea, one in the Philippines and five in Australia, said Lt. Cmdr. Steve Chesser, public affairs officer of the U.S. Naval Service Group in Long Beach.
