Dr. Vert Mooney, formerly chairman of orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Dallas, has been appointed professor in residence of orthopedic surgery and chief of orthopedic research at the UCI College of Medicine.

In addition, Mooney will serve as a professor in the orthopedics program at the new Irvine Medical Center, which is scheduled to open in 1989, university officials announced.

UCI officials said Mooney is internationally recognized for research into care of bones, joints and muscles after injuries.

Mooney’s approach to orthopedic care is directed toward activity, not rest. “The most efficient way for a patient to return to a normal routine is guided activity,” Mooney said. “Soft-tissue strains such as back injuries can be handled with early activity instead of rest or surgery.”
