The 1989 San Diego Soviet Arts Festival has received a big boost in the form of a $500,000 contribution from newspaper Publisher Helen K. Copley. Copley, however, restricted the money for performances by local arts groups, earmarking the funds for festival productions by the San Diego Opera, the San Diego Symphony and the Old Globe Theatre. Along with a $1-million donation by philanthropist Joan Kroc and a subsidy by the city of San Diego of up to $3 million, the grant leaves $1.75 million to be raised in the $6.25-million festival budget.
