* General Atomics, a nuclear energy researcher and contractor, has received a five-year, $217.2-million contract from the U.S. Department of Energy to continue magnetic fusion research at the company’s Torrey Pines research facility.
The contract, which at first will not result in any new jobs, will enable General Atomics to continue experimental operation of its fusion device called the D111-D tokamak. The device, the second largest magnetic fusion device in the country, was built in 1978 and since has been upgraded. Since 1979, Japan invested $70 million in GA’s fusion research program.
