AIDS Cases Nearly Double in Ireland

The number of AIDS cases in the Irish Republic has almost doubled in 1988, according to official figures published on Friday.

The Irish Health Department said of 65 people who contracted acquired immune deficiency syndrome, 28 died. There were 33 cases on Jan. 1.

A further 800 people were known to be infected with the HIV virus that can trigger the disease. About 60% of those were intravenous drug abusers are believed to have caught the virus by sharing dirty needles.
