Jim Thorpe, a black golfer from the United States, was criticized by South Africa’s largest black newspaper for competing in the country in defiance of an international boycott.
Thorpe, whose visit is being paid for by a corporate sponsor, is “out to make a fast buck,” said an editorial in City Press, a twice-weekly newspaper published in Johannesburg.
The editorial followed Thorpe’s comments to journalists that he was unconcerned about South Africa politics and not worried about violating the United Nations’ cultural and sports boycott, which was imposed by the United Nations to protest apartheid--South Africa’s system of racial separation.
