Colombia’s Defense Minister, Gen. Manuel Jaime Guerrero Paz, escaped unhurt from an assassination attempt by a pro-Soviet guerrilla group, police said. Three of his bodyguards were killed and two were wounded when a powerful remote control bomb hidden near a lamppost exploded as the minister’s motorcade passed near the Defense Ministry building in western Bogota, police said. A radical splinter group of the pro-Soviet Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, the “Ricardo Franco” group, claimed responsibility for the attack in telephone calls to media.
