Street battles between Islamic fundamentalists and Christian demonstrators in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum left one police officer dead and at least 60 people injured, police said. Supporters of the fundamentalist National Islamic Front took to the streets to protest the signing of peace proposals by the Democratic Unionist Party, the second largest in the governing coalition, and rebels of the Christian-led Sudanese Peoples’ Liberation Army. The counterdemonstrators, Christians from the south, clashed with the Muslims before police intervened. Unofficial reports said that up to 150 people were injured.
