In Defense of O’Rourke

I gotta admit it, I think P. J. O’Rourke is funny. Yes, I know he’s a snide, sarcastic, judgmental, superior, class-conscious little snip, but then, so am I.

His main problem seems to be that he doesn’t fall into any quick and easy categories. The irony is that the people who write in a similar vein, only from the gonzo left, are granted immunity from criticism by the liberal intelligentsia who seem to think that their point of view is morally superior, steeped as it is in the ink of Malibu martyrs and Central American day trippers.

Calling O’Rourke a racist is nothing but the leftist version of the epithet “pinko.” If O’Rourke is racist, then we also have to call anyone who uses the terms redneck, dumb blonde and WASP racist as well. That would put a lot of liberal writers in a serious bind.
