Guyana Will Import Sugar to Meet Commitments to Its Regular Buyers
Guyana, a major sugar producer, will import sugar from Mexico for domestic consumption and use its stockpile to meet European commitments, the government said.
The state-run Guyana Sugar Corp. said last week that extremely low production this year caused it to purchase 4,000 tons of sugar from Mexico and scale down its annual sugar harvest target from 210,000 to 170,000 tons.
Guyana, the English-speaking Caribbean’s largest sugar producer, earns most of its foreign exchange from sugar, rice and bauxite. It has never had to import sugar before.
The company said it was unable to meet its U.S. quota of 10,000 tons and asked Jamaica and Belize to take up the slack.
