In an obituary about Marian Welch in Sunday’s editions, The Times erroneously reported, based on an Associated Press report, that John Birch was a missionary who was killed in China in 1954. Capt. John Birch, in whose name the ultraconservative John Birch Society was founded, had worked as a missionary in China before World War II, when he served as an intelligence officer. Birch was killed by Chinese communists on Aug. 25, 1945, 10 days after V-J Day.
