The Nation : Cubans Ask Justices to Halt Deportation
Imprisoned Cuban refugees asked the Supreme Court to block their deportation to their homeland as the Justice Department moved to resume a program to repatriate those who have committed crimes since arriving in the United States. The full court took up the matter just hours after Justice Anthony M. Kennedy turned down the initial request for a stay sought by 13 Cubans seeking to overturn a ruling requiring their immediate repatriation. A ruling from the court was not expected until today. The Administration announced Nov. 17 that the Justice Department’s Mariel Cuban Repatriation Review Panels had reviewed the cases of 28 detainees and decided to deport 15 convicted of crimes ranging from burglary to murder.
