Two former nursing home employees have been arrested in connection with two of eight suspicious deaths last year at the Alpine Manor Nursing Home, Police Chief Walter Sprenger announced today.

Gwendolyn Gail Graham, 25, was arrested Sunday in Tyler, Tex., on one count of murder in the death of Edith Cook, 98. Catherine May Wood, 26, was arrested at her home in nearby Grand Rapids on two open counts of murder in the deaths of Cook and a second patient, Marguerite Chambers, 60. Meanwhile, the investigation into the deaths of six other patients at the suburban Grand Rapids nursing home between January and April, 1987, will continue, the police chief said.

Former employees at the home have alleged that a nurse’s aide smothered the patients with a pillow and that another employee witnessed at least some of the slayings but failed to intervene or report them.
