Greece reneged on an extradition deal with Italy and deported a suspected Palestinian terrorist sought in connection with a 1982 attack on a Rome synagogue that killed a 2-year-old boy and injured at least 34 others. Justice Minister Vassilis Rotis said that Abdel Osama Zomor was deported to “a country of his choice,” which police sources said was Libya. In 1984, Greece’s Supreme Court agreed to an Italian extradition request for Zomor, but it was not carried out. Rotis said the extradition order was rejected because Zomor’s acts stemmed from his “struggle for the independence of his country.” Zomor, allegedly a member of Abu Nidal’s terrorist organization, was jailed in 1982 for arms smuggling.
