About 1,000 people demonstrated peacefully in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia, calling for the release of a leading religious activist who has been confined to a psychiatric hospital since October. Police arrested one of the organizers but did not otherwise interfere with the 20-minute protest in a downtown square. The protest was in support of Augustin Navratil, the author of a petition calling for religious freedom that was signed by about 600,000 Czechoslovaks. Navratil, 60, who is widely known in Czechoslovakia and has repeatedly been interrogated and detained in the last six years, was confined in the hospital, just outside Olomouc, on Oct. 28.
