General Motors said it would make profit-sharing payments this year, its first since 1985, to about 450,000 hourly and salaried workers in the United States. The payments were expected to approach $90 million and would amount to about $200 each for employees who worked the entire year, Chairman Roger B. Smith said. GM’s earnings for 1986 and 1987 were not high enough to trigger profit-sharing provisions. The payments were made possible by improved sales and successful cost-control efforts, Smith said.
