Paramedics called to treat an asthmatic 9-year-old boy left a city housing project when their ambulance was pelted with eggs, and returned with police too late to save the boy, authorities said today.

Paramedics were unable to revive Carl Jarnagin, who died a short time later at a hospital, said Bill Crowley, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman. The two paramedics, first summoned by an emergency call Monday afternoon, were not aware of the seriousness of the boy’s health problem when they arrived at the project on the city’s South Side, Crowley said.

After being pelted by eggs and possibly stones, they decided to leave and summoned police. They returned after half an hour and worked for 30 minutes to revive the boy before taking him to Mercy Hospital, where he died, Crowley said.
