A Palestinian shepherd crushed a Jewish West Bank settler’s skull with a rock, then grabbed his rifle and fired on an army patrol, killing a soldier before other troopers killed him, the Israeli army reported. Two soldiers were wounded, the army said. The deaths of the settler and soldier bring to nine the number of Israeli Jews killed since an uprising began Dec. 9, 1987, among the 1.7 million Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. About 300 Palestinians have been killed. Maj. Gen. Amram Mitzna, Israel’s West Bank commander, said the attack occurred near Berakha, a hilltop Jewish settlement 2 miles south of Nablus. Mitzna said the shepherd’s family was involved in a land dispute with residents of Berakha .
