Seedling Offered for Recycling Yule Tree

Los Angeles city officials have announced a Christmas tree recycling program that will offer participants a free seedling when they take their trees to a recycling center after the holidays.

Residents can take their withering Christmas trees to seven centers that will operate throughout the city from Dec. 31 to Jan. 7. The trees will be taken to the Lopez Canyon landfill, turned into mulch and spread at parks and roadways to protect soil and conserve water, officials said.

The first 10,000 recyclers will receive 6-inch tree seedlings.

“We’re just trying to encourage people to recycle,” said Bureau of Sanitation spokeswoman Anna Sklar, adding that the seedlings will not be Christmas trees, but varieties such as jacaranda, Chinese fig or Mondell pine.

Venice, 3233 Thatcher Ave.

Lincoln Heights, 452 N. San Fernando Road.

San Pedro, 1400 N. Gaffey St.

Hyde Park, 2002 W. Slauson Ave.

Officials asked that decorations be removed before trees are turned in for recycling.
