Greece’s political crisis deepened as Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou threatened to resign if Parliament refuses to pass his 1989 budget. In a televised address, Papandreou said that he considers today’s decision on the budget a “vote of confidence for me and my government.” Papandreou, who returned to Greece in 1974 from exile in the United States when democracy was restored, swept to victory in 1981 and headed Greece’s first Socialist government. His ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement won 161 seats in the 300-member Parliament in 1985, but an internal rebellion has recently rocked the party.
