Chinese Communist Party leader Zhao Ziyang told Iran’s foreign minister that Beijing is ready to help Tehran rebuild its economy, devastated in the eight-year Persian Gulf War, the New China News Agency said. Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati, who held three days of talks with Chinese leaders in Beijing, told Zhao that Iran “welcomes very much” China’s participation, the news agency said. He said China expressed interest in helping build factories, dams, railroads and agricultural projects in Iran. But he said no details had been worked out and that Iran had not asked China for loans. Velayati also briefed Zhao on the stalled Iran-Iraq peace talks in Geneva.
